Oh sweet Macarons
The Patisserie and bread-making scene has picked up greatly here in the past few years, much to our taste buds and appetites’ delight. Thanks to places like Vovotelo, Dresden Bakery, Cobblestones etc we’re able to once again – since our trip to Europe, or the enlightened bakeries in the big cities of SA – dine on those delicious aromas, textures and tastes!
Now after many attempts at recreating it’s shape, texture and sweetness, Ginger Pops in Port Elizabeth will be selling the widely loved and lovingly devoured, French Macaron! With it’s beautiful variety of colours, flavours and fillings, these little treats are perfect on wedding tables, will brighten up party favours and dessert buffets, they’re delicious gifts for fellow sweet appreciators, and of course, a great treat to spoil yourself with!

The Chinese community here in Port Elizabeth have a tradition of serving chow mein at a party when it’s someone’s birthday. The long noodles represent long life, and it’s tasty! So for our Kung Fu teacher, I was asked to make a cake that could be eaten quickly during training, given to him to take home afterwards for his family, and something that looked cool. Last year I made him a Dragon cake, this year I made him this :

The sweet things in life
Another month of a baking rush only this time, instead of the seething rays of the sun beating down upon my makeshift workshop, this month has seen my doors fighting to stand strong against billions of buckets worth of rain.
Initially, when I started Ginger Pops ( my cupcake business), I’d thought to keep it simple and only offer elaborately decorated, dessert -like cupcakes, but now, thanks to the confidence of friends and a “word of mouth” advertising frenzy, I have all sorts of requests that I can’t bring myself to turn down. I’m not one to say I’m unable to do something without at least trying and practising to first. So it’s a cake adventure to recreate anything and everything in edible form.
This has however been the cause of my new somewhat hermit life in my workshop, with a lot less time to travel for the time being…
soon I will get back into seeing the world, on a more part time basis of course, and then I shall take my crazy cupcake ideas along with me!

Have a Heart for Japan
Japan’s in trouble and is working through a pile of disasters… There’s been a great response, world wide, of fundraisers and donations being raised and sent to offer relief to those without homes, food and water, and to aid in the rescue missions which are still happening as I write this.
As for the Nuclear reactors, I think all we can do from this side is pray that the problem can be can be sorted out before any more disasters fall on the Japanese community.
Even though I’m nowhere near that side of the world, I feel really thankful that there are people that are willing to sacrifice their time, sleep and even lives in working to help people.
All doctors, medical assistants and people outside of the disaster areas sending food and blankets etc to the earthquake and tsunami hit areas.
The leaders of Japan that have not slept in days.
The people in the disaster hit areas that have been so helpful and considerate towards each other.
The firefighters, pilots and rescue crews from around the world that have come to give helping hand!
AND especially…. all the people working to solve the nuclear reactor problem, risking their lives to save Japan. You guys are heroes and I pray for your safety and success!
Everyone that has offered help to Japan in one way or another, thank you!

I’m not from Japan, or Japanese, but it is such an encouragement to see a community of people so willing to help each other in bad times, and to see countries do the same.

“Let them have cupcakes…”
she said with a strange combination of indifference and concern. Cake is ALWAYS a good solution to any problem. Save for the odd one or two issues that it would act only to perpetuate the situation.
She glances at the multitudes of children, lovingly devouring the sugary decorations that adorn each cupcake. Little giraffes bidding their tree-top hideouts farewell, Dr Zoidberg standing menacingly, waiting for the end which is apparently “nigh”, and a comical Spongebob, joyfully oblivious to the danger ahead.

Time for Tea
Time for Tea <3
Here it is, just the begining of my plan to take over the world with cupcakes of all shapes and sizes!
Soon to be based in the beautiful coastal city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa… where the sun shines, the wind blows, and yes… creativity flows, bust mostly a place where there’s ALWAYS time for tea.

Wild lions I have known
So after a cupcake-free month, filled instead with determined Monanimal sewing, I have been asked to make African animal cupcakes for a christening… they left me with loads of room for colours, and these are probably the brightest christening sweets I’ve ever seen! Why not! Who said babies could only like pale blues or pinks anyway!
This is the first layered cake I’ve done in a VERY long time, and I was really happy to see that it actually looked FINE! I’m not a fan of covering cakes with fondant icing, but it came out alright all the same. Cupcakes are still THE BEST

Sadly I have to say goodbye to my little creations T-T But there’s no fear in selling them to make them the happy, loving belongings of someone who loves them! More are on their way!
